Why are we alive?

So, I haven't updated this blog in forever, mainly because during that time I had my son.

He's finally at the age where he's asking these questions so hopefully I'll update this more often.

His first "hard" question was: "Why are we alive?"

My answer to this is to find out what alive means first.

There is no single definition of "life" so I picked one that says:

Alive is what we call something that takes in and uses energy to grow, and react to the world around it.

We are alive, because we eat food that gives us energy. We use that energy to grow, and move around. We react to the world around us using our senses: eyes, ears, nose, tounge, and skin.

Every human that is alive is doing these things. When we stop doing these things, its usually because part of our body stopped working right. We call something that used to be alive, dead.

This was kind of a short and simple explanation, but it was good enough to satisfy my son's question, so we'll leave it at that.

Hopefully he follows up with a question of "How do we start being alive?"

I'll write another page for this when that day comes :)
